Professor Alex Toftgaard Nielsen
Alex Toftgaard Nielsen is a professor at the Novo Nordisk Center for Biosustainability at the Technical University of Denmark. He has a background in the fields of metabolic engineering, bacterial physiology and single cell biosensor systems. He holds an MSc and PhD degree in Chemicals Engineering and Microbiology from the Technical University of Denmark and has received postdoctoral training at Stanford University. Additionally, he has held positions at two different companies, Exiqon in Denmark and Genencor in California, USA. At Genencor, he was working on the biological production of isoprene, a significant bulk biochemical. In 2011, he was appointed Professor at the Technical University of Denmark, where his research focuses on production of biochemicals by metabolic engineering of various bacteria. Additional research activities include the development of novel synthetic biology tools for metabolic engineering and heterologous protein expression. His research is applied in nature with a significant focus on patenting and commercialization of biotechnological processes.
